How recognition works

In Germany the profession is called Pflegefachfrau or Pflegefachmann (registered nurse). Before you can practise, the responsible authority checks whether your training is equivalent.

During the recognition process you can often already work on the team as a nursing assistant.

Recognition check

This information is an overview and does not replace legal advice. The responsible authority makes the binding decision.

  1. Step 1: Collect your documents

Diploma, transcript of subjects and hours, proof of clinical placements, CV, references – usually as certified translations.

  2. Step 2: Submit the application

You apply for recognition at the responsible authority – we support you with it.

  3. Step 3: Decision

The authority compares your training with German training. If there are differences, you receive a decision that lists them.

  4. Step 4: Adaptation course or knowledge test

You make up for the differences with an adaptation course or a knowledge test.

  5. Step 5: Recognition

With your certificate you work as a recognised registered nurse.

What level of German do you need?

For recognition you need German at level B1 or B2, depending on the federal state. We support you in learning German.

B1
Sufficient in some federal states
B2
Required in many federal states – and a good basis for everyday work on the ward
