How the licence to practise (Approbation) works

To work permanently as a doctor in Germany, you need the Approbation. It is granted by the authority of the federal state where you will work.

Until you receive the Approbation, you can often apply for a temporary licence (Berufserlaubnis). With it you can already work in the hospital.

Recognition check

This information is an overview and does not replace legal advice. The responsible authority makes the binding decision.

  1. Step 1: Collect your documents

Diploma, transcript of subjects and hours, licence to practise from your home country, CV, references – usually as certified translations.

  2. Step 2: Submit the application

You apply for the Approbation at the responsible authority – we support you with it.

  3. Step 3: Equivalence check

Degrees from the EU are usually recognised automatically. For degrees from other countries, the authority checks equivalence – sometimes a knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) is required.

  4. Step 4: Medical language exam

At the medical chamber (Ärztekammer) you show that you can communicate confidently in German in everyday hospital work.

  5. Step 5: Approbation

With the Approbation you can work as a doctor in all of Germany without time limits.

What level of German do you need?

For the Approbation you need general German at level B2 and a passed medical language exam (medical German, around level C1). Together with our partner hospitals we support you in learning German.

B2
General German – certificate from a recognised provider
C1 medical
